What is cross-region AMI copy?

Cross-Region AMI copy is an AWS feature that allows you to take an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) created in one AWS Region (the source) and replicate it to another completely independent AWS Region (the destination).
Because AMIs are inherently bound to the specific region where they are created, they cannot be used to launch an EC2 instance in a different region until they are copied there first.
