Why are On-Demand Instances suitable for short-term workloads?

  • No upfront commitment — you pay by the second/hour with no contract, so you're not locked in like you would be with a Reserved Instance (1–3 year commitment)

  • Start and stop freely — spin one up for a quick test, task, or burst of work, then terminate it the moment you're done, and billing stops immediately

  • No planning required — Reserved/Savings Plans only pay off if you know you'll run something continuously for a long period. Short-term or unpredictable workloads can't guarantee that, so committing would actually cost more if you end up not using it fully

  • Good fit for: dev/testing, learning (like your SAA practice!), short batch jobs, proof-of-concepts, or workloads with unknown/irregular duration

The trade-off: On-Demand has the highest per-hour price of all EC2 pricing models — you pay a premium for that flexibility. It only makes sense because for short/unpredictable use, that premium costs less overall than committing to a reservation you might not fully use.
