The root volume is typically created from an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). It contains the boot loader, OS kernel, system libraries, and default applications. Depending on the AMI, it may use: EBS (Elastic Block Store) – for persistent storage (default for most AMIs). Instance store – ephemeral, data lost when instance stops (used rarely). You can also store additional files or install applications on it, but it’s best practice to use separate EBS volumes for application data or logs.
