While the virtual hardware is provisioned instantly, an EBS volume behaves just like a brand-new, unformatted external hard drive that you just plugged into a computer.

Before you can save files, you must complete three quick setup steps:

1. Attach the volume to a running EC2 instance in the AWS Console.

2. Create a file system on the volume (such as ext4 for Linux or NTFS for Windows) so the operating system knows how to read and write data to it.

3. Mount the volume to a specific directory (folder) on your instance's operating system.
