An Azure NAT Gateway works by associating a public IP address with a private subnet, enabling resources within that subnet to initiate outbound internet connections while remaining private. When a private virtual machine (VM) sends a request to the internet, the NAT Gateway performs Source Network Address Translation (SNAT), replacing the VM's private IP with the NAT Gateway's public IP before sending the traffic to the internet. For the return traffic, the NAT Gateway uses its connection-tracking table to route the response back to the correct private VM.
