To recover an EC2 instance with a lost key, detach its root volume, attach it to another instance, and update the authorized_keys file with a new key. Alternatively, use EC2 Instance Connect or SSM Session Manager if configured.

You can stop the instance, detach the volume, create a new key-pair. Attach the volume to a temporary instance, replace the keypair in the file-system reattach the root to the original instance and then restart the instance.
