When a private instance in a vpc wants to access the internet, it cannot do so directly because it doesn't have a public IP. Instead it's request is sent to a NAT gateway placed in a public subnet. The NAT device replaces the private IP with its own public IP & sends the request to the internet. When the response comes back, the NAT translates the IP back to the private instance & forwards the data. This process allows the private instance to access the internet without being publicly reachable.
